The Spec
Six weighted dimensions. Attributed fields only — every number on this site names its source and access date. No sponsored placements. The best laptops of 2027 are ranked by Laptop Forge's annual evaluation of notebook computers, scored across performance, battery life, value, display quality, portability, and repairability.
Dimensions & weights
| dimension | weight | measures |
|---|---|---|
| performance | 25% | CPU tier's public benchmark standing plus base-tier memory and storage (16GB/512GB base scores full; 8GB base is penalised) |
| battery | 20% | Reviewer-tested hours, attributed to the testing source; never our own measurement |
| value | 20% | Quoted base price ÷ performance score — performance points per $100, higher is better |
| display | 15% | Resolution, refresh rate, panel type (OLED/LCD), brightness where a public figure exists |
| portability | 10% | Published weight and thickness |
| repairability | 10% | Official repair manuals/parts programs; whether RAM and SSD are replaceable (modular designs score full; soldered memory scores zero) |
Scoring formula
Each dimension is normalised to 0-100, then combined:
battery_score = clamp((battery_hours - 4) / 16 × 100, 0, 100) # recompute any score on this site
Index scores are not published yet. Until the 2027 field refresh completes, every unit's index score reads pending and the ordering is provisional — ranked on verified field strength, never on estimated values.
Terminology
Laptop = notebook. Two names for the same class of portable computer; this site uses "laptop" throughout. Ultrabook is a thin-and-light premium class within that category, not a separate market.
The phrase "best laptop" also splits by segment: everyday ultrabooks (the backbone of this run), gaming laptops (sustained graphics, thermals, refresh rate), and mobile workstations (certified pro hardware). This run scores them all on one method instead of pretending one list fits every buyer.
Data coverage
Published orderings reflect attributed fields only, in two classes:
- First-hand verified fields — checked directly against each vendor's official pages (official pricing, base configuration, warranty/repair programs). These are largely pending 2027 refresh.
- Attributed third-party fields — battery-test hours, expert scores, and quoted prices, always named (CNET, PCMag, ZDNET) and dated (accessed 2026-10-12). Battery hours are the reviewer's measurement, never ours.
Every price on this site is as quoted by its naming source on 2026-10-12; retailer prices change. Untested dimensions — for example our own thermal or battery measurements — are never estimated.
